Info Post

The previous Mercedes A-Class was never considered a true Mercedes. This was thanks to the many ills it had chief among them being its overall design.

Mercedes A-Class
To come up with a replacement, Mercedes went to greater length including borrowing some specialists from its in house tuning division, AMG. The result is probably one of the best hatchbacks money can buy.

Previous Mercedes A-Class
The new A-class is based on a new two-box design feature. This gives the A class a striking exterior and an exceptional high-quality interior. The typical features on its new long, sporty bonnet are the separate headlamps, the radiator grille that comes with a centrally positioned Mercedes star, as well as the additional air intakes on the sides.

A remake that involved many brains

However the most exceptional design detail is its new headlamps with LEDs.  The LEDs have been arranged arranged in such a way as to create the characteristic "flare effect" for the daytime running lamps and indicators. A radiator grille that has numerous metallic silver "dots" on black stems can also be installed giving the A-Class an even better front look.  The side view consists of moulded sculptural side panels and distinctive lines.

Sculptured side look

The roof slants from the front to the rear to give the A-Class a sporty look. A roof spoiler, which conveniently hides all the A-class aerials, provides an extra sporty touch to the rear of the car. Stylish rear lights with fibre-optic cables and LED modules help improve the sporty rear design of the A-Class. There is also an inter-play of convex-concave surfaces and edges that help boost the aerodynamic capabilities of the car.

18-inch AMG alloy wheels

Order either the A250 Sport or A 220 CDI Sport and you will get some AMG magic touch on your A-Class. One gets excusive 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with a 5-spoke design with 235/40 R18 tyres. The rims are painted in high-gloss black and have a high-sheen finish. Behind them are red-painted brake callipers.

Unique rear design

The looks are further boosted by AMG front and rear bumpers.
Under its new long front nose are numerous engine levels fitted to each particular A-Class model. The petrol version lists consists of two particular models.

Rear AMG styled bumper

There is the A 180 with a 1.6 litre engine with 115hp. The mid of the range A 200 comes with 156hp while the top of the range A 250 comes loaded with a 2.0 litreengine with 211hp. Diesel engines are also available. The base diesel model is the A 180 CDI which comes with 109 hp. Next on the list is the A 200 CDI with a maximum output of 136hp. The top of the range is the A 220 CDI with a 2.2 litre engine that has an output of 170hp.

Its heart

All engines feature an ECO start/stop feature as standard. The engines are married to either a six-speed manual transmission system or an optional 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission system. The new A-Class now sits 18 centimeters lower than the previous model giving it a lower center of gravity.

Cockpit

Power is sent to the rear wheels and managed by a new 4-link rear axle. One can also order it with the 4MATIC all-wheel system that distributes power to all the four wheels. The A-Class can also be ordered with an AMG sports suspension that comes with a Direct-Steer system. The system makes the A-Class handle better on any surface and also offer confident steering response.

Fibre optic and LEDs in action

True to Mercedes philosophy of safety, the new A-Class gets a host of driver assistance and safety features as standard.  One of the standard features is COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST. This is a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist, which lowers the risk of rear-end collisions. The system does this by giving visual and acoustic warnings to alert a possibly distracted driver to identified obstacles. At the same time it prepares Brake Assist for the most precise braking response possible.

Front headlamps with a flare effect

This is initiated as soon as the driver steps firmly on the brake pedal. It also gets PRE-SAFE a preventive occupant protection system. The system works by tightening the seat belts, closing all side windows and also slides the sunroof. At the same time it adjusts the front seats to an ideal position for the air-bag to protect against injury.

The A-Class also comes with ATTENTION ASSIST, brake HOLD and Hill-Start Assist as standard. Optional driving systems include DISTRONIC PLUS, Reverse Camera, Speed Limit Assist, Active Parking Assist, LINGUATRONIC, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.

Three spoke steering wheel

A high-quality feel welcomes one to the A-Class interior. The instrument panel is clearly divided into a wing profile-type upper section and an aesthetically influenced lower section. Each of the sections can be made using various materials.

Classy and unique interior

The instrument panel incorporates five round vents, the outer rings of which have a high-quality electroplated finish. The airflow direction is governed by an insert that is reminiscent of an aircraft turbine an idea it borrows from its SLS AMG cousin. The air vents have and electroplated outer finish. A free-standing display screen features a black piano-lacquer-look front panel and a flush-fitting silver frame.

Free standing screen

The instrument cluster comprises two large round instruments, each of them with a small round instrument set within it. The driver grips a 3-spoke steering wheel that comes with 12 function buttons. The comfortable seats can be covered with a wide range of materials like leather, fabric or Artico fabric.

Front sports seats

Once can also get cool sports seats with integrated head restraints. A large panoramic roof is also available to boost interior lighting for the 5 occupants in the new A-Class. At night one enjoys interior ambient lighting from the Light and Sight package that comes with the panoramic roof as standard and a choice of interior ambient lights. The new A-Class is available in three unique trims. There is "Urban", "Style" and AMG Sport.
