After the successive launch of the new generation Mercedes SL series, AMG (Mercedes in house tuning division) has released hardcode tuned versions of the SL. There is the SL 63 AMG and The SL 65 AMG.

They are now lighter compared to the outgoing models. The SL63 now weights 1845 kilograms while the SL65 AMG is now 170kg lighter compared to the outgoing model.

This is thanks to the use of aluminium in the making of the body shell. With less weight the engine has less bulk to move, hence both new models are more fuel efficient than ever.

The grill sits in the middle of the dynamically slanting headlamps. The headlights together with the new AMG radiator grille give the new roadster its own unmistakable face. The AMG body styling improves its overall front look thanks to the restyled front bumper and large air intakes. There are also AMG-specific LED daytime running lamps and a lower front air splitter finished in silver chrome.

The headlamps come as standard with the Intelligent Light System (ILS) with five different lighting functions that are tailored to typical driving and weather conditions. They are activated depending on the driving situation and offer the driver a much better illuminated field of vision.

For the SL63 AMG the side has a ‘V8 BITURBO’ logo while the SL65 AMG has a ‘V12 BITURBO’ logo. They are located next to the vent grilles with fins finished also in silver chrome. Both beauties come with factory fitted with five-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy 19 inch wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish.

However one can order each with Multi-spoke AMG forged wheels from the AMG Performance Studio. This set has 19 inch front wheels and 20 inch rear wheels. They are both finished in matt black. At the back LEDs adorn the rear lights. |

They give it an amazing appeal at night. A high break light seats above the rear three pointed star while twin exhaust pop out at the back. The AMG spoiler lip, the two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system and the diffuser-style rear apron with body-coloured insert draw the AMG styling to a fitting conclusion.

For the first time one can order the SL 63 with two power output options. The first option is an AMG 5.5-litre V8 'biturbo' (twin-turbocharged) engine that 537 hp and 800 Nm of torque. 0 to 100km/h is over in just 4.3 seconds. To get to 200km/h from a standstill will take you only 12.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250km/h.

If one thinks that this is not enough AMG will gladly include an AMG Performance package in your SL 63. With this kit everything changes. It now has an output of 564 hp and 900 Nm of torque. 0 to 100km/h takes only 4.2 seconds. 12.6 seconds is all you need to get to 200km/h! The top speed is also raised to 300km/h. fuel consumption in both is an impressive 9.9 litres for every 100km covered.

However if you one is not impressed by the SL63 figures, SL65 will surely impress. First on the list is its impressive AMG 6.0-litre V12 "biturbo" (twin-turbocharged) engine that develops a maximum output of 630 hp. The torque is pegged at 1000 Nm. Next, it will need only 4 seconds to go from 0 to 100km/h and 7.8 seconds more to get to 200km/h and lastly, the top speed is electronically pegged at 250km/h. It has a fuel consumption of 11.6 litres for every 100km covered, an impressive 2.4 litres less compared to the outgoing SL65 AMG.

Married to both engines is the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G‑TRONIC transmission system. The seven-speed automatic transmission has wide gear ratio spreads that help to significantly lower engine speed and helps to reduce fuel consumption.

The transmission has four different driving modes; Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), Sport plus (S+) and Manual (M) which can be selected at the push of a button on the center console. In "C" mode the ECO start/stop function is permanently active.

Weight saving measures have also been done on the suspension. The steering knuckles and spring links of the 4-link front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension components are made of aluminum. Both come with Active Body Control to give both cars impressive handling capabilities. They also come with electro-mechanical steering AMG speed-sensitive sports steering.

Both SL’s comes with and optional vario-roof. The roof can be retracted into the boot using an electro hydraulic mechanism to save space. It only takes 20 seconds to convert it from a roadster to a coupe. The roof is available in three different variants. There is the painted with glass roof or panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. With MAGIC SKY CONTROL transparent roof switches to light or dark at the push of a button. When in light state it is virtually transparent, it offers an open-air experience even in cold weather. In its dark state the roof provides welcome shade and prevents the interior from heating up in bright sunlight.

Inside fine materials are perfectly finished with great attention to detail. The interior space has also been increased by 50mm in length and 57 mm in width. This provides more room to the interior thus boosting comfort. For the SL63 AMG Standard equipment includes AMG sports seats in single-tone or two-tone nappa leather. They also have a unique V8 seat upholstery layout and AMG badges in the seat backrests. The SL 63 interior also has AMG carbon-fibre trim, AMG illuminated door sill panels and an IWC-design analogue clock.

For the SL65 there are exclusive design and equipment features help differentiate it from its eight-cylinder sister model. It has electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with single or two-tone upholstery consisting of nappa leather. There is also a special AMG diamond pattern that is visible on the door centre panels.

Both SL’s have AMG performance steering wheel, AIR SCARF feature, heated seats and ambient interior lighting and a sportily designed AMG instrument cluster that provides a wealth of information. The cluster consists of an AMG start-up display, AMG main menu and RACETIMER.

There is also a high-resolution COMAND (Cockpit Management and Data System) 800 x 480 pixels TFT colour display located at the side, next to the instrument cluster. The COMAND system has numerous functionalities like Bluetooth connectivity, telephone, DVD changer and Internet browsing capabilities that enables one to use news app and also access social network like Facebook. With the internet service one can also get weather reports, maps and Mercedes Services online.

The system has been incorporated with a FrontBass system. The system uses free spaces in the aluminium structures as a resonance spaces for the bass loudspeakers. As result occupants enjoy a clear, crisp bass sounds that gives a concert hall feeling even with the roof down. It also frees up space in the doors. The boot can also be opened hands free thanks to a new system called HANDS-FREE ACCESS system. The driver simply moves their foot in the vicinity of the rear bumper. The difference between this system and the rest in the market is that it can open and close the boot automatically.
