Ever since its first model coined a new word crossover, the Mitsubishi Outlander has stood the test of time to become one of the most sorts after crossovers on the planet. The previous model had thrown the Outlander’s known good looks to the dustbin. However for the new model, the famous good looks are back, and are now even better than before.

Its front now has a new look consisting of a restyled front air intake, headlights and grill. The ugly front headlamps have been replaced with all new uniquely styled Super-HiD wide vision xenon headlamps that give an even brighter illumination at night. Powerful fog lamps sit at each end of the lower front while the ugly air intake in the previous model has been replaced with a low wide intake that helps boost its new aggressive look.

A slim front aerodynamic grille sits in-between the sculptured wrap-around headlamps. Stylish hockey-shaped chromed strips shield the classic three-diamond logo located at the center of the front grill. A bulged design that runs from the wheel arches to the rear wheels gives the side a wide look. Distinctly styled alloy wheels complete its new side profile.

At the back restyled rear lights adorn the back while a silver reflective strips join both rear lights. An air spoiler with a high mounted reverse light pop out at the rear boot.

Twin reflector and another incorporated reverse lights boosts rear visibility to other road users. A black under skirt runs all-round the crossover that helps protect its underside but also reveals the off road capabilities of the Outlander.

Under the bonnet is a choice of two engines. The first one is the 4J11 2.0 1 MIVEC petrol engine. This has a new valve train that boosts its overall fuel economy. Next on the list is the 4NI4 2.2 Clean Diesel engine which features a low compression ratio that helps boost its overall performance. Both engines have a total output of 148hp.

All engines are married to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and also feature an all new automatic Stop & Go system. The system cuts the engine off when the car is idle and switches the engine on when the driver presses the accelerator pedal.

Power from the engine is sent to all four wheels by an all new 4WD system. The new Outlander also boasts of new safety features such as Adaptive Cruise Control that maintains a safe distance to the vehicle in front on low speeds in a heavy traffic jam.

Another system called Forward Collision Mitigation system detects obstacles ahead and applies brakes to prevent a collision. Lane Departure Warning System completes its list of safety systems. This warns the driver that the vehicle ahead is about to depart from its lane through a visual warning display and a buzzer.

Inside the driver is greeted to an all new restyled front cockpit. It has an all new infotainment system, restyled air vents, an all-new multifunctional steering wheel and instrument cluster. It has room for five to seven occupants who will enjoy improved interior silence thanks to the NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) reduction technology.

The infotainment system has been integrated with a rear reverse camera. The rear boot space can be increased by folding the 2nd and 3rd row seats. The 3rd row seats are comfortable and wide providing much comfort than previous jump seats.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander returns the glory of the first Outlander in every form. Its new spacious interior makes it a practical everyday family car. Prices for the new Outlander start at $23000 or Kshs 2 million excluding taxes. I bet I would see it on Simba Colt show rooms very soon.
