Audi is celebrating 30 years since the debut of the Quattro back in the 80’s. The old Quattro was a machine worth of praise. It was the king of world rally for years thanks to it amazing all wheel drive system which back at the eighties was something complicated.

The engineers at Audi had a gruesome task of ensuring the car meets with previous ancestor’s feared performance. Well judging by the look of things, the concept brings back old memories of the legendary 1984 Audi Quattro Sport.

The new Quattro is based on the powerful Audi RS5. They took the RS5 wheelbase shortened it by 150 millimetres and lowered the roofline by around 40 millimetres. Like its predecessor from 1984, the 2010 concept is now also a two-seater.

The heavily modified body is made primarily of aluminium, with the hood, the rear hatch and other components made of carbon fibre. The low weight of the whole car, which weighs around 1,300 kilograms, is amazingly similar to the weight of the 84 Quattro.

Under the bonnet is a light turbocharged, inline five-cylinder engine that can trace its roots back to the Audi TT sports car. It has a total output of 408 bhp and will accelerate from 0 to100km in just 3.9 seconds. Connected to it will be a six-speed gearbox. The Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system delivers its power to the road.

As with 84’ model, the trademark four rings can be found at the transition to the side of the vehicle, but in this case they are stamped into the sheet metal. It comes fitted with 20-inch wheels in a 7-twin-spoke design. A significant feature of the front end is the stark single-frame grille.

| LED headlights |
All light units use ultra-efficient LED technology. The LED elements ‘change’ their appearance between a horizontal and a vertical arrangement and thus change the character of the front end of the vehicle depending on the lighting function activated. The large spoiler integrated into the rear hatch is also made of carbon fibre and extends automatically as needed and can be adjusted for maximum down force.

| Cockpit |
The interior of the coupe is simple and modern just like it was when the Quattro model was launched. Shortening the wheelbase meant losing the rear seat. In its place is a shelf for helmets or luggage. Awaiting the two occupants are lightweight bucket seats.

| Always stylish like all Audis |
The seats are equipped with either three- or four-point belts. The instrument cluster has been digitalized with clear graphics. On both the right and left sides are four flat buttons. The ones on the left control the stopwatch function in racing mode, and the ones on the right are for the menu of the Multi Media Infotainment system.

Audi recently gave it the green light. I hope we will see the final results soon. Word on the street is that Audi is making a comeback into the Kenyan market. The company responsible for this is Marshalls East Africa. Can’t wait to have a look of what they have lined up for the Kenyan market.
